Sun Lion Villa, with its original and inspired architecture, is a house built to maximise the appreciation of the landscape that surrounds it. Viewed from the terrace, a sweeping panorama encompasses the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain, Lions Head and the Twelve Apostles. Built on an incline, the deck, swimming pool and garden overlook the coastline and setting sun. In keeping with the style of the rest of the house, the swimming pool has no square edges or corners, and blends into the surrounding shape of the private garden and lawn. A perimeter wall insures both pool and garden are protected from the gazes of neighbours and passers-by, allowing the guest total privacy.
Please be aware there are many steps up to the house (the equivalent of 3 storeys to climb = 62 steps). While some guests may appreciate a mild workout on their holiday, it may not be suitable for the elderly or infirm. An additional benefit of the stairs is that it dissuades unwanted visitors, beggars or tradesmen from disturbing our guests.
Our guests also benefit from the added comfort and security of having our manager and housekeeper, Clarah Mupindu, readily available to assist with any needs or urgent situations. Clarah is easily contactable at any time for information or problem-solving. She resides in the housekeeper's quarters adjacent to the property, with her own private entrance, ensuring our guests' complete privacy while they enjoy exclusive use of the house and garden.
While the house is a favourite amongst children, please be warned that the terrace has no protective netting, and the swimming pool has no fencing, which should only be an issue if they are infants or young children that cannot swim or need constant supervision. We have often hosted families with children, and luckily, there have been no incidents in the 25 years we have rented the house to holidaymakers, but as per the terms and conditions, you will have to accept responsibility for accidents or mishaps of any kind.
It is extremely rare to find good-sized, detached properties for rent with so few bedrooms, because the average house in Camps Bay has 4 or 5 bedrooms, making it prohibitively expensive for couples or small groups to find the privacy of somewhere they can have the entire property to themselves.
A few words about our philosophy when renting out Sun Lion, as tastes and requirements differ among guests. We always strive that the description, photographs, and the video to accurately reflect the look, atmosphere and style of the house, and set up the correct expectations with our guests to prevent any unexpected surprises.
So please study all the pictures and video closely, and be aware that the house is a fun and original African experience with unique architecture, colour and design.
We like to keep it animal-friendly, and do not decorate it with expensive designer furniture and fittings. Most of our fittings are bespoke and handmade by local craftsmen who have had to build them to follow the unusual shape of the house and fit its curves and unconventional angles.
We support the local indigenous artisan community by buying objects and paintings from local artists to give our home a very down-to-earth African feel. This allows us to keep prices affordable, while catering to guests who prioritise and value the exceptional location, views and architecture above the bland sterility of square-shaped generic and small International hotel spaces that look the same the world over.
Information for golfers: The following nine golf courses are within a half hour drive from Sun Lion Villa: Bellville, Clovelly, Metropolitan, Milnerton, Mowbray, Rondebosch, Royal Cape, Steenberg and Westlake. A further nine clubs are reachable within the hour: Atlantic Beach, Boschenmeer, Erinvale, Pearl Valley, Somerset West, Spier, Stellenbosch and Strand. There are four more golf courses within the Western Cape Province; Arabella, Hermanus, Langebaan and Worcester, but those can only realistically be enjoyed as part of an entire day trip outing.
